Asian population in California has experienced rapid growth, surpassing that of other ethnic groups. This demographic shift, accompanied by a higher rate of intermarriage among Asians, is expected to lead to an increase in Asian individuals filing for divorce. While interfacing with the American family court system, Asian clients have often been misunderstood due to cultural differences in manner, values, and communication styles. As part of this workshop, we will explore the generational effects on parenting in America. Family law attorneys and mental health workers will also learn how to successfully engage with their Asian clients in a manner that effectively addresses a cultural tendency to withhold information. By gaining an awareness of the contrast between Eastern and Western parenting norms, we open opportunities to provide services in a manner more aligned with the cultural background of Asian clients seeking help and understanding.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the cultural values and beliefs that influence Asian parenting practices.
  • Analyze the impact of different generations on Asian parenting styles in America.
  • Identify common challenges and misconceptions surrounding Asian parenting in high conflict custody cases.
  • Compile effective strategies for evaluating and supporting Asian-American families in high conflict custody cases.
