Civility has changed. Understanding the influences of these changes and the role perception plays in assessing, understanding, interpreting, experiencing, and responding to incivility in court, with clients, attorneys and experts. The importance of civility in building meaningful relationships, creating and maintaining a productive work environment of camaraderie, inclusivity and a sense of belonging. Civility is a critical factor in making difficult and life-altering decisions for families. Lawyers, judges and experts occupy a significant role in the preservation of a democratic society. When all family law professionals engage in challenges with respect for both sides, they instill confidence in the family court process and in the Rule of Law. Civility promotes and achieves better outcomes. It makes the legal process more efficient and inexpensive for clients. Bullying and dishonesty prolong legal disputes and often lead to unjust results. When incivility dominates, productive dialogue devolves.
